September 18th Joint Worship Service

As part of our continued partnership with West Raleigh Presbyterian, Davie Street will be worshiping with West Raleigh Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 18, 11:00 am to hear the Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Director of the Presbyterian Office of Public Witness, Washington DC.  The service will be livestreamed on the West Raleigh Presbyterian YouTube channel. The livestream link is here and at the bottom of this post.   There will NOT be a worship service held at Davie Street Presbyterian Church on September 18th.

WELCOME REV. JIMMIE HAWKINS

Rev. Jimmie Ray Hawkins has served as the Director of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Public Witness in Washington D.C. since 2017.

Rev. Hawkins served as pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC, 1996-2016. During his tenure the congregation constructed a new church building, maintained an active weekday and summer ministry for youth, and welcomed non-profits and community groups to share the then new facility.

Rev. Hawkins has served as Treasurer on the Church World Service global board and as a board member of the National Council of Churches. He was a board trustee with Union Presbyterian Seminary. He is a tri-chair of the Washington Interreligious Staff Community and the Heads of Washington Offices. He has chaired several interfaith /ecumenical and non-profit boards. His community ministry includes being a leader for the Moral Monday Movement since its onset in 2013.

Rev. Hawkins served as a member of the NC NAACP Executive Committee and has been active in justice advocacy throughout his ministry. He is engaged with the Poor People’s Campaign and participated in a direct action at the Supreme Court in 2017.

His book, Unbroken and Unbowed: A History of Black Protest in America, was recently published by Westminster John Knox Press.

Rev. Hawkins is married to Sheinita Hampton Hawkins, and they have two children: Kaela Renee, who is in her first year at Spellman College, Atlanta and high schooler, James Hampton.

Rev. Hawkins will speak with the Sunday morning Adult Classes in WRPC’s Fellowship Hall at 9:45.

His sermon for the 11:00 worship service One In Christ, is based on Genesis and I Corinthians.
